Cornwall Council is currently consulting on its Core Strategy. This will provide the framework for development in Cornwall over the next 20 years.
In the last 50 years Cornwall’s population has grown by 208,000 and the number of houses has risen from 132,000 to 255,000.
Second homes in Cornwall have also increased. New analysis also reveals that Cornwall contains the highest number of second homes in the UK at an average price of £247,432. There are now over 14,000 second homes in Cornwall
Despite the number of new homes that have been built, the affordable housing problem has dramatically worsened. Our economy remains low-waged, seasonal and fragile.
Cornwall Council’s Core Strategy now proposes to plan for a minimum of 48,000 houses, increasing the built-up area of Cornwall by over a fifth in just two decades.
These figures mean that the population is planned to grow to more than 600,000 people by 2032. In planning for sustainability, we must realise that we have a finite amount of land available and an infinite future ahead of us and our descendants. If we continue to plan by projecting past trends further into the future, by 2087 our children and grandchildren will be living in a Cornwall of more than a million people, twice the current numbers.
This level of housing and population growth means:
- · the loss of significant areas of countryside
- · the continued urbanisation of our towns and villages
- · much more traffic and congestion
- · irreversible depletion of our natural resources for food production
- · increased waste to dispose of
- · increased demand on water supplies
