Cornish Language Weekend

Friday 5th to Sunday 7th/Monday 8th February 2010

The Western Hotel, Gabriel Street, St Ives, Cornwall, TR26 2ND

Agan Tavas will be hosting a small scale Cornish Language weekend for anyone interested in speaking the Cornish Language Kernewek.  The weekend will cater for complete beginners and more experienced speakers and will include all meals (except Friday evening), entertainment and a trip to Tate St Ives.

The venue will be the Western Hotel, right in the heart of St Ives and very close to all the facilities of this beautiful West Cornwall town.  All rooms have en-suite facilities.  There are 2 bars, one of which has a dance floor which we will use on the Saturday evening. Residents can check in after 2pm on Friday.

The residential cost is £80 per person for 2 nights full board in an en-suite room to include breakfast, morning and afternoon tea/coffee, light lunch and evening buffet on Saturday/carvery lunch and cream tea on Sunday.  There is also a special rate of £25 bed & breakfast available if you wish to stay for the Sunday night, giving a total 3 night all inclusive package price of £105.

The cost for day visitors is £15 per person per day to include morning and afternoon tea/coffee, light lunch and evening buffet on Saturday/carvery lunch and cream tea on Sunday, giving a 2 day cost of just £30.  Partners who do not wish to participate in the language weekend may take advantage of these special inclusive rates but there is a minimum booking requirement for everyone of 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) for residential guests and 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) for day visitors.

The daytime programme at the hotel will cater for complete beginners in one group and those with some Kernewek plus more experienced speakers in the second group.  The trip to Tate St Ives will be in English with some translation in Kernewek.

This weekend is immediately prior to St Ives Feast Day which falls on Monday 8th February.  On Feast Eve, Sunday 7th February, members of St Ives Guisers go out round the town, usually ending up in the Western Hotel’s Kettle’n’Wink bar playing traditional Cornish music with dancing, poetry and storytelling.  Feast Day Monday 8th February is officially celebrated by the town and begins at 9am with a civic procession, with children from local schools and other organisations.  The procession goes from St Ives Guildhall through town to the Venton Ia well and back to the Parish Church gardens where the ancient hurling of the silver ball is re-enacted.  The annual distribution of pennies takes place after the return of the silver ball at noon and there is a local rugby match in the evening.  Participants of the language weekend are most welcome to join in all the festivities, especially with the Guisers and the civic procession.
