A PETITION BY SOME AMERICANS FROM CALUMET TO BE PRESENTED TO THE MAYOR
BY DAVID OATES
Some Americans from Camborne’s twin town of Calumet in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have come on a visit to Cornwall, bearing with them a petition from those of Cornish descent in Michigan protesting against this assault on the national dish! Michigan probably produces more pasties than Cornwall in a year. The story appeared in the New York Times and was soon picked up in the Cornish communities and caused offence to the many Cornish Americans
Supported by Camborne folk, they intend presenting this petition to the Mayor of Camborne, Jean Charman, on Wednesday this week at 10 am outside of the new pasty shop in Treswithian, formally Glasson’s Garage in the presence of the press. Jean Charman will then pass this petition to MP George Eustice, who has promised to place it into the hands of our Prime Minister.
