March 5th is a day for celebration in Cornwall, its St Pirans day, the patron saint of Cornwall and tinners alike for it is said that St Piran was the founder of tin. Celebrations where held all over the Duchy of Cornwall today including a march through Truro city. Patriotic events where covered by the local radio station Atlantic FM. Celebrations will continue all week including the pilgrimage at Perranporth on Sunday with the St Piran's play re-enacting the story of St Piran, a march across the dunes and a service at the old Piran Oratory. This photo is from a gathering at Launceston where a Cornish Piper played Trawlawney the national anthem of Cornwall as the flag was raised on the Castle. Pure Cornish Heritage, nothing English about it whatsoever. More pictures here. |
